[C2] [오늘의 표현] 'Rising to the challenge' 기대 및 도전관련 표현
여행을 기대하고, 새로운 직장을 기대하는 마음들이 언어로 표현된다면?
흔히 말하는 미래 시제와 관련된 것처럼 보이지만 훨씬 다채로운 방식의 표현들이 존재한다. 예컨데 "나는 무엇을 기대한다"와 같은 상투적인 표현 외에도 기대와 관련되서 사용될 수 있는 주요 표현들을 통해 좀 더 풍부한 의미를 구사할 수 있다.
세 가지 짧은 글을 통해 살펴보자.
1. My first day as a travel agent was tough, as the office was busy with customers. The things I'd learnt in training were really put to the test. On the whole, I think I rose to the challenge well, but there was one query I simply couldn't answer, and I had no choice but to call my boss for help.
'put to the test' - 시험에 직면시키다, to cause to be in a situation that shows how strong, good, etc.
e.g. Tomorrow's game will really put the team to the test.
'rise to the challenge' - 문제에 도전하다, someone acts in response to a difficult situation which is new to him or her.
e.g. I rose to the challenge of entertaining 80 school children yesterday.
'had no choice but to' - 잘 알려진 표현이니..
2. On a recent trip to Spain, I went to watch Barcelona play Real Madrid. I'd never been to such a huge stadium before, and I arrived early so as to soak up the atmosphere. In my country, the standard of football is much lower, so for me, it was a great eye-opener to see the incredible skill of the players. After such a fantastic match, I was well and truly hooked on Spanish football.
'soak up the atmosphere' - 분위기를 흡수하다로 직역할 수 있겠다. getting involved in the way of life there.
e.g. I come here once or twice a year to soak up the atmosphere.
'eye-opener' - 눈이 휘둥그래질만한 일.
'well and truly hook on' - hook은 갈고리다. 갈고리에 채여질 만큼 확 빠졌다 보면 된다.
e.g. I'm well and truly hooked on her voice.
3. My first ever interview was for a place at university, and not surprisingly I didn't know what to expect, so t was all rather new and intimidating for me. A lot was at stake, so it was a real sink or swim situation. But the interviewer told a joke to put me at my ease, and from that moment on I was much happier.
'don't know what to expect' - 뭐가 일어날지 모르겠다
'sink or swim' - 양자택일, 혹은 죽느냐 사느냐까진 아니지만 선택의 상황
'from that moment on' - 그 순간부터,,
그 외 기대와 관련된 다양한 표현들
a. It's by no means certain that the job will go to an external candidate.
b. You can invite anyone you like to my birthday party, within reason.
c. I can assure you that each of your proposals will be judged on its own merits.
d. John's angry reaction to my letter was completely over the top.
e. Clare's claim that she locked the door behind her is at odds with what she said earlier.
f. You could try to get a refund on your ticket, but in all honesty, I don't think there's much point.
g. Ivan's English improved beyond all expectation when he stayed with a host family in Manchester.
h. I've done all I can for you, but ultimately the matter is out of my control.
